Sweet Jeanne

Relatively speaking that is.

Fred reports that Jeanne passed Viera with little effect. There was much wind, but significantly less water than encountered with Frances. The house and its occupants were unscathed as was Astrea. Power was lost for a period of about two hours during the height of the storm and it is theorized this was an intentional discontinuation by FP&L to mitigate damage.

John and Ethan had been visiting prior to predicted landfall and left Saturday morning. Due to evacuation closures, they were forced to take a return route through Georgia, but otherwise arrived home Sunday afternoon unaffected by the storm.

In related news, Herman has been keeping in touch of late with old classmates through the TKG_Class_of_1984 Yahoo! Group. One, Julie, is living in Orlando and has been providing updates during the last four storms as well. She and her fiancé report experiences similar to that of Carmen and Fred through the visits of Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne — lots of wind and rain, but relatively little devestation personally.

With an apparent lull in the turbulence for the foreseeable future, we congratulate all of our family and friends on their very great fortune so far in weathering the 2004 hurricane season.

Proselytizing

Mark has recently obtained a set of special theme plates for his Mini.

The state of Texas recently made available a specialty plate celebrating the sixth consecutive Tour de France victory of Lance Armstrong, reminding other road users that bicyclists are recognized as legitimate users of the public roadways in the State of Texas and to "Share the Road" accordingly. Additional information about the Texas version can be obtained at the Texas Bicycle Coalition web site.

Mark attempted to convince Herman to join him in his advertising efforts. However, Herman indicated that he prefers to allow his actions to speak louder than his words by stating that his preferred vehicle is not required to bear licensing plates; thus, his money could be better spent elsewhere! ;-)

Post-Ivan

News has been received, via broadcast mail, that Jen, Christopher and George have successfully weathered the onslaught wrought by Hurricane Ivan last week. As a precaution given their being in the predicted path of the storm they had bugged out to Hattiesburg on Tuesday. In the end, they suffered little more than some damaged trees and a three day power outage. Apparently, the creek behind their home rose to the point of inundating the yard, but remaining well clear of the house.

By way of a little perspective, Jen and Christopher live in Moss Point, Mississippi. Their home is located very near the Alabama border and only five miles inland from the coast. Since the storm took a last minute turn to the east just before coming ashore, they were several miles further west that originally predicted. Nevertheless, at its closest they were only approximately sixty miles from the eye of the storm.

2004 I. E. Andrus Reunion

Notice has been received confirming the date for the Fifth Annual Isaac and Hortense Andrus Family Reunion. The gathering will take place on 09 October at the "Old Home Place" beginning at 0900 and continuing until dispersal — usually dusk. More information and the specifics for the event are contained within the post to #kempiCommunity.

Surviving Frances

Elizabeth has learned from Fred that the household, all inhabitants, and Astrea have survived yet another hurricane.

Having been more directly in the path of Frances than of last month's visit by Charley, Fred had to board-up the windows and take other more drastic precuations this time. Though most of Brevard County did not fare as well, Carmen and Fred did not lose power during the weekend and made it through the weather system with relatively minor damage — a few uprooted trees.

Astrea also survived the storm unscathed. She had been taken out to the middle of the ICW and moored to a premanent anchorage prior to Frances' arrival. In checking on her yesterday, Fred found her to still be where expected in the river. He indicated that other vessels were not as lucky and that the marina was almost completely destroyed.

We congratulate Fred, Carmen and Mary on their outstanding luck and wish them well for the rest of the season. Ivan is looming on the horizon and, while there is no firm progonostication as to his eventual path, we hope he veers off from landfall in Florida.

KL(P)M recognition

During routine fact checking, we have discovered four previously unknown publications on which Kimberly is cited as a contributing author. All appear to be internal reports for the Texas Transportation Institute. Nevertheless, they qualify as legitimate bibliographic references and have been catalogued on the Denizen Recognition page.
