Scholar News: February 2006

Jen had two peer-review journal articles make it to publication during 2005. The first appeared in the April edition of The Auk and is entitled "Habitat and Sex Differences in Physiological Condition of Breeding Southwestern Williow Flycatchers (Empidonax trailliiextimus)". Compelling evidence is offered by the authors disputing the theory that saltcedar habitats offer unsuitable breeding environments for Willow Flycatchers. Avian Hosts for West Nile Virus in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, 2002 appeared in the December edition of the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. In this article, the authors surveyed populations of several passerine bird species for signs and extent of WNV infection.

Owen, J. C., M. K. Sogge, and M. D. Kern. 2005. Habitat and sex differences in physiological condition of breeding Southwestern Willow Flycatchers (Empidonax trailli extimus). The Auk, 122:1261-1270.

Komar, N., N. A. Panella, S. A. Langevin, A. C. Brault, M. Amador, E. Edwards, and J. C. Owen. 2005. Avian hosts for West Nile virus in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, 2002. American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 73:1031-1037

These articles have been logged to the running list of denizen publications.

Christopher and Jen are both expecting the publication peer-reviewed articles later this year in The Auk and Condor, respectively. More information will be posted when details are available.

2006 Birthday Bash
(or the first annual Johnson Family reunion)

Members of the extended Johnson Family gathered at Roma's for an early dinner, followed by a rendez-vous at Mike and Catherine's for visiting and dessert. Four generations were represented and members of all but one of the several branches attended the festivities throughout the evening.

Jen and Christopher arrived shortly after 18:00 at the home of Elizabeth and Herman following a day-long trip from Franklin Creek. Sandra followed suit a few hours later reporting her arrival at Marianna's home. Joanne, Andrea and Michael (Wienen) embarked upon their pilgrimage Saturday morning and arrived in the early afternoon. They, too, staying with the Johnson Family matriarch.

Everyone began to arrive at Roma's around 16:30, with the final individuals just making it before 17:00. The fare was fair, as there is no compare to the Mauro marinara. Nevertheless, the company was impeccable and worth any culinary shortfall. Only two households were unable to make the meal.

The entourage migrated to Catherine and Mike's around 18:30, where the next couple of hours were consumed with chatter and sweets.

F. P. "Pat" Adams Jr.
1915-2006

It is with a heavy heart and much regret that we report the death of the Adams Family patriarch. Pat Adams died this afternoon at 14:30 as preparations were made to transport him back to Jasper.

He had taken ill about a week ago and was transported down to Beaumont for medical tests and treatment. Recent dispatches from the family had reported the discovery of "spots" on various organs throughout his body. Given his diminished health, the decision was made to transport him back home for what may transpire. With an ambulance on its way, he is reported to have turned to his nurse and stated, "he was going home."

A funeral has been planned for 10:00 Monday at First United Methodist Church, with visitation scheduled for Sunday evening from 16:00-18:00 at Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Three descendants of the Walters Family will be making the trip.

Mailing Lists

In an effort to extend the utility of the site for family members, a new group of resources has been created. A series specialized mailing lists will premier during the course of the next week. These will be compartmentalized into the three major target branches: Adame, Johnson and May. The family specific lists will be augmented by an announcement-only umbrella list to serve as a global news conduit.

The global, announcement list will premier later today. Invitations to join will be mailed to all family, whether existing community members or not.
