11 April 2006Marshland Restoration SpotChristopher has made the evening news again. A local television station, WLOX, aired a segment during a recent newscast wherein they highlighted steps the Grand Bay NERR is taking to mitigate degradatiion through restoration projects. In particular, they spotlighted the use of transpllanted Juncus neddlebrus plugs to held prevent erosion. Christopher provides a few introductory comments and then is briefly interviewed again near the end of the story (look for "Jaimee Goad Reports On Marshland Restoration"). 07 April 2006KE5HYWHerman has become the second member of our community to be granted transmission rights on the amateur RF bands. In so doing he joins Fred, N2TOO, as a licensed amateur radio operator. This has been a long-standing goal of Herman's, which has heretofore been put off for this or that reason. However, the recent NASA SuitSat project and the prolific QSO activity of Bill McArthur, KC5ACR,the recent Commander of the ISS (NA1SS) Expedition 12 crew, both contributed to a rekindling of his interest in achieving this goal. Members of the Adame Family will note that this achievement ends the long-standing Adame Amateur Radio Prize. Since earning his ticket in 1993, Fred has offered as a prize his current (at the time of award) HT rig to whichever of his children or grandchildren were the first to qualify for amateur radio operator rights. The scope of this competition included spouses. With his successful completion of the requirements, Herman was awarded the prize, a Yaesu VX-5RS, during a recent visit to Florida. Never content to remain a novice, Herman is already studying and improving his code proficiency with an eye toward progressing toward achieving Amateur Extra licensure by the end of the year. continue to the March 2006 archive ⇒ |
